Human Perception In Internet Communication

Hey readers!!

Now,we will look into 3 differents aspect of human perception in internet communication.First, in email, is that your responses are not real-time: in a face to face conversation you can do a perception check and after you’ve received feedback, continue on. Pausing for verification of a perception check in email could lag the conversation by hours or days, rendering you unable to pick up your train of consciousness. If you do include a perception check and then continue based on one of your interpretations, the respondent often ignores the request for clarification and replies as if the interpretation you used was your decided stance.

In chat, the challenge is that discussions are simultaneously lower and higher bandwidth than in-person interactions. On the one hand, ten people can simultaneously have three conversations, where in person they would have to pair off or not participate in the other two. multiple threads of conversation make misinterpretation easier, and individual participants generally cannot communicate as fast as they could via speech. Furthermore, many types of perception checking that can occur in person; the general tenor of the group, the number of people paying attention, their expressions and level of participation all provide hints as to the reception you’re getting for what you say. In chat it is very easy to talk over people and to frustrate people for whom you would otherwise temper your message because you can’t see these signals. Finally, in writing for my website I am writing into the void. I am interested in a variety of topics and the depth of my knowledge is sometimes very deep and sometimes very shallow. I have no way of knowing what concepts are familiar to my audience and what style of writing will be off-putting. It is extremely difficult to get perceptual checking on writing that I intend to post, because even when I do solicit feedback prior to posting something, I am invariably getting feedback from an unrepresentative sample of those who will experience my post.

Implications of the Effects of Internet Use!!!

hey readers!!!

With the ongoing debate on the positive and negative effects of the Internet, I feel that it is time to discuss the significance of the two different arguments. Which effects are in fact significant? Which effects are indeed negligible?

The apparent negative effects that can be easily identified are symptoms of computer addiction. As Wieland says, computer addiction may lead to depression, gambling, substance abuse and marital infidelity and divorce. Throughout the article, Computer Addiction, Wieland takes a negative perspective of technological advances in general. She asserts that overusing technology could result in negligence of others and self as a result of computer addiction. However Wellman and Kraut et al., in 2002, reported the positive effects of Internet use on communication, social involvement and well-being.

Kraut says that over 90% of Internet users email every day and that leads to increased time online and discourages them from going offline. Putnam says that the increase in other communication services online make up “virtual social capital.” The Internet allows people to connect without geographical restrictions allowing for broader access increased social involvement. It also facilitates that creation of new relationships, social identity and commitment among otherwise disconnected people. However Putnam states that communication online may encourage people to spend more time alone, and forming superficial relations forgoing the expense of deeper discussion and companionship. Wieland, at a more sever level, finds that although a useful tool for communication, virtual relationships may involve into online marital infidelity or online sexuality compulsive behaviors.

There are increasing health concerns regarding cyberspace disorders such as Internet addiction disorder and pathologic Internet use. This inability to control use of the Internet can lead to social isolation, family discord, divorce, academic difficulties, job loss and debt. However, Wieland recognizes that there were external factors that should have been taken into account - such as past histories of psychological problems. Wieland also supports the displacement hypothesis in saying that the individual spending time online decreases time for physical activities and socialization.

Kraut suggests two hypotheses: the “rich get richer” model predicting those who are highly sociable will get more social benefit from Internet use. They will be able to reinforce existing ties and as a result gain more social involvement; and the “social compensation” model predicts that those who lack social support would profit most from Internet use. Wellman validates this by how people are more willing to help and be involved because they can mask their identity and be anonymous. The study found, contradicting Putnam, that participants who used the Internet more had increases in the sizes of their local and distant social circle. Also their face-to-face interaction with friends and family had actually increased. Therefore we should not only well on the negative impacts on the Internet but also consider that benefits that users can take advantage of this new means of communication to develop online relationships into more ‘meaningful’ offline relationships.

Wellman takes on an optimistic perspective of the Internet. He focuses on how it has helped us, allowed for accuracy and speediness of information collecting. Sociologists have feared that rapid modernization would lead to loss of community, but I agree with Wellman in saying that the social groups have simply “relocated” to the virtual world rather than disappear altogether. It only makes sense for people to adapt to changes in the sociological trends that have always been happening. Also I feel that “virtual reality” is not a separate “reality,” rather it is integrated into our everyday life. The Internet does not restrict us from building close relationships but merely slows down the process due to the limitations in bandwidth transmission.

Currently we are increasingly dependent on computers to perform tasks for us, to run errands more efficiently etc. According to Wieland, every 3 months the rate of Internet use increases by 25%, which is substantial. Thus, the Internet these days play crucial role in everyday life. While the Internet is an excellent source of information and means of communication, it is difficult to ignore the health risks associated with prolonged use.

Online Customer Services

hey readers!!!

Customer service issue has to be the key element that a business should take into account in this competitive business world. Besides, a good reputation will be held by the business by being more innovative and improve all matters in costomer services. Now, we will give some brief information on how to improve our communication skill towards our beloved customer.

As we all know that Web site is available on a 24 hour, seven days a week basis. So it is well worth exploring ways in which the customer can communicate easily to the company.

James Feldman is President of JFA, Inc., an online business offering high quality and unique gift items including automatic watch winders, Grundig shortwave pocket radios etc.The JFA Web site has been online since 1997, and has doubled its income every year - it’s now a multi-million dollar e-commerce enterprise. (http://www.jfainc.com)

Therefore, we attach some of his article that may help all of us for achieving an effective online customer services.

1. BE ACCESSIBLE. Show very clearly on your site all the ways that your customer can contact you - including e-mail, phone and fax numbers, and your office hours. Give your visitors a real person to call who has a name.
2. REPLY every e-mail or phone call in the same day, as far as reasonably possible. we can use Auto Responders which allow you to send an immediate, pre-written response to anyone sending email to a designated address.
3. ACKNOWLEDGE EVERY ORDER. Send e-mail confirmations (this can be done very effectively with autoresponders), and if you’re shipping actual products, give tracking numbers and expected delivery dates.
4. PROVIDE A CLEAR RETURN POLICY, honor it and learn from it. This may give you more information about what’s working and what’s not. I.g some products sometimes returned with no explanation, so the staff should call the customer to establish and resolve the problem.
5. EXPECT MORE PHONE CALLS. James says: “Customers can’t read or write!” If your Web site traffic and response rates grow (which is, of course, what we want), so will the volume of phone calls, whatever your business or industry.

Rollo May
Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.
At last, hopefully by implementing the tips above may help your business in improving your online customer services and for sure increase customer satisfaction!!!
Good Luck...

Hey Readers!!!

First of all, We would like to start our blog with the definition of internet and communication...it sound interesting right???Referring to the wikipedia founded by Jimmy Wales, internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that interchange data by packet switching using the standardized Internet Protocol Suite(we known as TCP or IP). For your information, it is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government network of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cable, wireless connection and other technologies.

Different with communication. Communication means the process of imparting information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium. As far as we are concern, there is a few medium that can be use. For example, body language, sign language, paralanguage, touch, eye contact or the use of writing.
